Laminate countertops are made from plywood or particleboard that is covered with colored treated high pressure plastic that is bonded to the base. There are two types of laminate countertops.  One is called “Postform”, which comes in full slabs direct from the factory with a pre-built edge and usually an integrated backsplash.  The other type of laminate countertop is called “custom”.  Custom laminate tops are generally built from scratch and have a square, beveled, or wood edge. Custom tops are generally used for unusual countertop layouts or for odd-sized tops. Postform is usually used for straight-forward countertop deisgns and layouts.

One very nice aspect of laminate countertops is that seams are often not visible. Laminate surfacing techniques have made seams very discreet, even hard to find sometimes. Our expert installers can install a laminate countertop in your home with a seam you will be hard-pressed to find. You can get a look that you love for a fraction of the price!

Typical laminate countertops are now much more durable than they used to be.  Even though laminate tops are somewhat resistant to scratches and heat, deep cuts and scorching can still be damaging to laminate surfaces.

When you are preparing food or need to use sharp utensils, be sure to use a cutting board or other protective surface. Never set a hot pan on your laminate countertop. If it isn’t cool enough to handle, you should not set it directly on the countertop surface. Always use a hot-pad to be safe. If your laminate countertop does need to be repaired by a professional, it will only take a morning or afternoon.
